King Crimson - Kurenai diaries

It's been a slow burn - catching that first wild trout with the Kurenai. Arriving just before total lockdown, it seemed for quite a while that the nearest my new HM33R would get to water would be the old wellhead in my garden. But I love this rod, so I kept the faith and kept a diary for Kurenai & I.. April Taking the UK lockdown ban on fishing as an opportunity to invest some time in improving my casting skills, I set out to get to know the Kurenai HM33R. Paired with a #3 NYLON line it's a dream, and I'm enjoying lawn casting for a few minutes each day to dinner plate sized targets. The targets at 20ft are very slowly getting smaller.. but a coffee mug at 30ft is still some time distant.. May OMG, the fishing ban is lifted! While still confined to staying local, I'm taking Kurenai down to some very urban edgeland water - the old and industrial Victorian Grand Union Canal. I'm fishing to the shoals of fish that patrol the channel in front of a grain processin...

notable absence

The fish in this picture is a stand-in for the one I want to show you. Oh so badly want to show you . It's similar, the scenario is similar. A wild brown trout from the same river catchment, caught by me, accidentally and out of season, while fishing tenkara for in-season grayling. There the similarity ends. Because the trout I want to show you is about five times bigger. It out-smarts me before I can get a photo. This is a shame because out of season or not, it's the biggest wild brownie I've ever caught, by any method, and an absolute monster for the river in question. A yard long, scaled from my net, if mere numbers could do justice to such a magnificent fish. And the problem is, it's way too big to fit into my scoop net, which up until just now seemed quite a big scoop net. In all honesty I'm not even sure I can claim I've caught it all, as it stays in my net only momentarily, half in - half out, before flipping...

too much information

There is another aspect to the nature/nurture debate, I've decided, and it relates to tenkara. In fact it relates to all fishing. In fact it relates to the very experience of living itself. Which brings me round in a circle. Much like the last fish I caught which swam round and around my waders on the end of my line. Am I losing you? Sorry, it's the mood I'm in. Let me explain. making sense This blog was never intended to be a technical endeavour, I'm more interested in writing about what it feels like to fish tenkara, or at least my own way of tenkara. Others are far better equipped than I for the other job. The writings here are mostly my way of straightening out my thoughts and making some sense of the fractal fragments of fishing time sna tched on the water. It is very humbling to me that a few people follow, enjoy and learn a little from my blog , and very exciting when I learn that a new traveller has been inspired to journ...
